ABC News Settles Defamation Lawsuit with Donald Trump for $15 Million

Home ✦ News Articles ✦ ABC News Settles Defamation Lawsuit with Donald Trump for $15 Million

NEW YORK — ABC News has reached a settlement with President-elect Donald Trump, agreeing to pay $15 million to resolve a defamation lawsuit. The suit arose from comments made by veteran anchor George Stephanopoulos during an interview, where he inaccurately stated that Trump was “liable for rape.”

The case stemmed from Stephanopoulos’s remarks concerning the civil trial involving E. Jean Carroll. While a jury in that case held Trump liable for sexual abuse and defamation, it explicitly did not find him liable for rape. The mischaracterization led Trump to file a defamation lawsuit, arguing the comments damaged his reputation and were made with reckless disregard for the truth.

Details of the Settlement

As part of the settlement, ABC News will not only pay $15 million in damages but will also cover $1 million of Trump’s legal fees. In addition, the network has agreed to append an editor’s note to the interview transcript and video, clarifying the error and expressing regret for the misstatement. While the settlement does not include an admission of wrongdoing, the financial payout and the corrective action signal ABC’s acknowledgment of the issue.

Trump’s Response to the Settlement

Following the settlement announcement, Trump issued a statement expressing satisfaction with the outcome. “The media has long been reckless in its portrayal of me, and this victory is a reminder that there are consequences for spreading falsehoods,” he said. Trump also used the opportunity to criticize the broader media landscape, calling for higher standards of accuracy and accountability.

ABC News Issues Statement

ABC News also released a statement addressing the settlement. “We strive to uphold the highest journalistic standards, and while this was an unintentional mistake, we take full responsibility for ensuring our reporting is accurate. We regret the misstatement and the impact it caused,” the network said.

Legal and Media Implications

This settlement highlights the fine line news outlets must navigate in high-stakes reporting, particularly involving political figures. Legal experts note that the case underscores the challenges of balancing free speech protections with the need to avoid defamatory statements. It also serves as a cautionary tale for journalists to verify information rigorously, especially in sensitive and controversial cases.

The case has drawn significant public attention, given Trump’s frequent clashes with the media. Observers suggest the settlement could embolden other public figures to challenge inaccurate reporting more aggressively.

What’s Next?

With this settlement, Trump closes another chapter of legal disputes as he prepares to assume the presidency. For ABC News, the outcome serves as a reminder of the stakes involved in maintaining trust and credibility in today’s polarized media environment.

As media outlets continue to navigate the complexities of modern reporting, the case serves as a timely lesson on the importance of accuracy and accountability in journalism.
